I took in the Vivian Maier exhibition in Chicago when I was there last week. To say she is a photography hero would be a bit of an understatement. It was pretty wild to stand in front of her photos instead of looking at them on a screen, and I think I stood in one spot for far too long, far too often, in quiet reverence.

The exhibit was a lot smaller than I'd hoped, but it made up for it by featuring complete rolls of developed film plastered around the perimeter of the room. That was ridiculously cool - to see frame by frame how she approached a subject until she got the shot she wanted. Not something we see with digital (except for our own), and very interesting to get inside her process a bit.

Steven saw an exhibition of her work previously and he described it along the lines of "simultaneously totally inspiring and made me want to give up all at once"... Yeah. That sounds about right.

Ah-maz-ing.

David S Pollack aka Chase Alias hopes to bring to light with his new Endogenous Series how backwards moving our cultural standards have become. As an Immersionist he look back in envy at the freedoms which artists used to be able to express themselves without having to worry about cultural and even legal action being taken against them.

Immersionism is a young art movement which combines Lewittian Conceptualism with Method Acting practices and principles. Stanislavsky and Strasberg Acting Methods which utilize sense memory and affective memory are an Immersionist's base. Lewittian Conceptualism adheres to the ideal that the medium is not the message, the idea becomes a machine that makes the art.

Our considerations tend to stop at a certain level, on a level that provides a sense of security. How many people willingly locate themselves in a state of insecurity? -Ai WeiWei

Chase Alias attempts to get into the mind state of Conceptual Artists Ai Weiwei particularly embracing some of his ideals and philosophies. This work is particularly inspired by the activist artist's struggles and triumphs throughout the year.

All that we do is done with an eye toward something else.

Imagine if artists had the nerve to make interesting public art anymore. We would all be a little richer. So often artists choose very commercial routes to exhibit and possible sell their works never realizing how much potential exposure and brand recognition is missed by ignoring public art. Very few artist have been bold enough to place their show freely. Banksy in London has made his city so proud his gorilla marketing style is a symbiotic approach to the art experience.

The original gorilla style art however was used and perfected by one of the original Gorilla Girls, Barbara Kruger. Her use of Russian reconstrutivust type faces mixed with Marshall McLuhan inspire phrase layer over her ver raw images gave the viewer A very guttural response. The greatest tool in her arsenal was her smart use of NYC's billboards to exhibit hers works publicy.

As a young Immersionist I have made sure to create a cannon of works that are as publicly visible as possible. Every image is CC and has great online exposure.

Edogenous Series 2010 - 2012 lends itself to a very large format. With grainy degenerative quaities and the use of heat quotes by fascinating people thes images would works very well on billboards in NYC and other metropolitan areas

The art of it is that the works will advertise nothing but impact their environments greatly all while employe the juxtaposition of using a traditional advertising medium. This might seem like a lift goal. But with public help, public art can be interesting again.

Chase Alias gets into the mind state of conceptual artists Ai Weiwei particularly embracing his ideals and philosophies about how he feels nudity is not pornography. Perhaps Chase is taking its to a slightly elevated level though. What is he saying about pornography? Certainly nothing more graphic or shocking than his Conceptual Art Photography forefathers did such as Mapplethorpe, Serrano or even Thomas Ruff.

Play 1, Basehouse: A Meditation/ Playplace for Cubby 2005 - 2010

Via Flickr:
Basehouse: A Meditation/ Playplace for Cubby.
Who is cubby and why is he meditating and/ or playing in this space? To further understand these things you must first grab hold of Cubby’s remote control. Walk slowly and carefully through his mazelike world. Look closely at all of his visual ramblings. Turn his world on and off using his remote. Sit where he sat while he thought about the world around him and while he did “other” things. Create a rhythm with the lights and sounds using the remote as he did and become part of this work of art yourself. Just as the artist David Pollack did when he created the character named Cubby.

By turning the camera on himself, and selecting the photographic Genre of self-portraiture, David Pollack is attempting to create a canon of works consisting of probing, surprising, and thoughtful images. Although, the majority of his photographs are pictures of him, however, these photographs are most definitely not self-portraits. Rather, Pollack uses himself as a vehicle for commentary on a variety of issues of the modern world. Pollack employs acting, in particular method acting, to create characters and lifestyles in which these characters choose to exist. He employs concepts of method acting to create characters, such as Cubby. He lives his life completely immersed in these characters lifestyles for years before building his installations ands then finally photographing himself as these characters. His final artworks are stunning full scale installation, sculpture and photography as seen here in Basehouse: A Meditation/ Playplace for Cubby.

This work of Immersion art is performed by Chase Alias and photographed by David Pollack. Immersion Artistist David Pollack spends years developing his characters. The development of these two characters happened over a period of 7 years. Cubby's Basehouse and then Chase Alias' Craigslist are David's newest series of works.

Immersion Art, Method Acting s a phrase that loosely refers to a family of techniques by which actors try to create in themselves the thoughts and emotions of their characters in an effort to develop lifelike performances. It can be contrasted with more classical forms of acting, in which actors simulate thoughts and emotions of their character through external means, such as vocal intonation or facial expression without psychological involvement on their playing role. Though not all Method actors use the same approach, the "method" in Method acting usually refers to the practice, advocated by Lee Strasberg, by which actors draw upon their own emotions and memories in their portrayals, aided by a set of exercises and practices including sense memory and affective memory.

Affective memory, also known as emotional memory, is an element of Stanislavski's ‘system’ and of Method Acting, two related approaches to acting. Affective memory requires actors to call on personal memories of situations similar (or more recently a situation with similar emotional import) to those of their characters. Stanislavski believed actors needed to take emotion and personality to the stage and call upon it when playing their character. He also explored the use of objectives, the physical body's effect on emotions, and empathizing with the character.

"Emotional recall" is the basis for Lee Strasberg's Method Acting. "Sense memory" is used to refer to the recall of physical sensations surrounding emotional events (instead of the emotions themselves). The use of affective memory remains a controversial topic in acting theory. (Wikipedia 2010)

Will Someone please tell me exactly what is so controversial about a Method Actor/Conceptual Artist creating an artwork to promote HIV awareness? Particularly to his own community. My goodness how backwards has our society become?

So this is Christmas, huh. Another year over and a new one about to begin. "What year is it anyway?" Robert thinks to himself. The last few years have all just sorts blurred themselves together in his mind. Bouncing around from house to house and state to state. Going where the cool wond Takes him. Ya dig! In one of Roberts rare moments of clarity he remembers to take his Atripla. "I hope these work this time" he says. He sure is happy with his gay doctor who understands him and his current lifestyle enough to give him the HIV drug prophylactically. Cuz the last few nights have been so unforgettable they remain a blur. With all of these guys throwing around all of these letters, T, C, G and D and no one stopping for a moment to even ask if he's poz. Let alone put on a condom. Condoms in this world are the taboo. What a word, what a christmas. Oh well, thinks robert, here's to a happy New Year.

This is a role being played by Chase Alias an actor. But for way too many young gay men out in the world, lost and alone, they play this role every day. Lets keep our wits about us when we go to blow our minds.

Once photography has broken away from its original function as technique or means for documentation, it is merely a fleeting state of existence that has been transformed into one possible reality. It is this transformation that makes photography a kind of movement and gives it it's distinct significance: it is merely one type of existence. -Ai WeiWei

David S Pollack elucidates the word of Patti Smith so eloquently written in her book "Just Kids". The book delves into the relationship between Smith and artist Robert Mapplethorpe.
